Finding Hope and Healing: Simon’s Journey to Recovery at St Margaret’s

Five years ago, Simon’s life took a difficult turn when his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Struggling to cope with the overwhelming grief, Simon turned to alcohol. “It was a horrible time,” he recalls, “I resorted to old behaviour and drank alcoholically for five years.”

Those five years were a dark period for Simon, and it was his family who ultimately intervened. “My family told me I couldn’t live by myself anymore,” he explains, “They said I needed to move to Rainham to live with my son and his family.” Reluctantly, Simon made the move, and with the support of his family, he was able to stop drinking.

But Simon wasn’t just looking for sobriety; he was searching for something deeper.

“I didn’t want to go back to my old ways,” he says. “I knew that God changed lives, but I didn’t know how.”

It was this search that led him to St Margaret’s Church in Rainham. Simon recalls walking through the doors of the church and immediately feeling the warmth of the community. “I was met with love and understanding and open arms,” he remembers. “The people here at Rainham gave me the support I needed.”

While Simon admits that he still doesn’t fully understand God, he’s found peace in simply opening his heart. “Rather than seeking God, I just wanted to open my heart and let God come into me,” he says. “That is working, and I’m learning and loving.”

For Simon, St Margaret’s has become more than just a place of worship—it’s become a second home. “It’s a second home to me,” he says with a smile. “And that’s why I’m here.”

Simon’s story is one of resilience, recovery, and the power of community. Through the support of his family and the love he found at St Margaret’s, he has been able to rebuild his life and find a renewed sense of hope.
