A LOVE LETTER TO OUR TOWN

THIS IS OUR PLACE.
LET’S MAKE SPACE.

Putting Rainham First is St Margaret’s vision for a more connected community. A place to belong, to create, to discover our heritage and to find a moment of peace. The church, churchyard and Millennium Centre are part of that story. The people of Rainham are its heart.

THE NEXT CHAPTER STARTS HERE

OLD SOUL.
NEW POSSIBILITIES.

For more than 800 years, St Margaret’s has been part of Rainham’s everyday life. Its building has changed with each generation. Putting Rainham First asks how we care for that inheritance while making room for the next.

13TH–15TH CENTURY

A church takes shape.

The medieval stone church grows and changes, creating the place Rainham knows today.

C. 1480

A landmark on the skyline.

The consultation booklet records the addition of the west tower around this time.

1870S

A new Victorian chapter.

Joseph Clarke’s reordering brings changes to floors, windows, pews, pulpit and font.

TODAY & TOMORROW

Our turn to care.

Making space for community while protecting what makes this place special.

ARTS

The project’s ambition is to make St Margaret’s a welcoming cultural hub, bringing exceptional performances and local creativity together.

The overview explores exhibitions, music, poetry, theatre, workshops and opportunities for local artists. Accessible, affordable cultural activity is a central theme of the consultation.

ST MARGARET’S · RAINHAM

ENVIRONMENT

The project proposes improving biodiversity in the churchyard, creating wildlife habitats, encouraging native planting and reducing the environmental impact of church activity.

The published overview sets out an ambition to reach carbon net zero by 2030. Energy efficiency, renewable energy and helping the wider community adopt sustainable practices are part of that vision.

ST MARGARET’S · RAINHAM

FAITH

St Margaret’s remains a place of Christian worship, prayer and community. The project brings that purpose together with the everyday life of Rainham.

The consultation proposes a chapel set aside for worship, prayer and contemplation, with more accessible spaces in which people can gather, reflect and share in the life of the church.

HERITAGE

St Margaret’s is a Grade I listed medieval church. Its fabric, monuments, stained glass, archive, crypt and churchyard hold stories that reach far beyond the building.

The project overview explores conservation, digitisation, exhibitions, educational resources and community heritage projects, making those stories accessible to more people.
